2012 Pre-Meeting Workshop: XML for University Press Publishing
XML offers an opportunity to add layers of new meaning and functionality to text both by enabling its adaptation to different media, formats, and platforms, and by transforming it into a full-fledged data resource. But XML and its associated technologies and standards can be complex and daunting, with many competing approaches within University Press publishing alone.
This half-day workshop will explore XML from many perspectives, moving from the theoretical to the practical, in four one-hour sections:
• Why? Philosophy of XML for University Press Publishing
• What? Introduction to XML: DTDs, Schemas, etc.
• How? XML and ePUB Workflows and Case Studies
• The Nitty-Gritty: Hands-on XML Encoding Using TEI Lite
(Participants are asked to bring a laptop computer if they wish to try hands-on encoding.)
