Web Metrics Thoughts
From AAUP-Wiki
[edit]
Summary of Thoughts on Web Metrics from Chicago at AAUP 2005
- 60 percent of visitors came from a “referring” site such as Google, Yahoo
- Hard to separate noise from certainty (so be skeptical)
- Visitors do not usually enter through the front door (only 17% come through the home page)
- Look every day at top 50 entry pages (most useful); understanding the links from other pages (like search and blogs) is crucial
- Featured content draws 10 times more visitors than product pages
- Metrics to look at include: how many visitors, who visitors are, where they came from • tools, forms, expert advice • pathways—where they entered and exited from
- Are hits correlated to sales? No one knows because no metrics have been tracked.
