Summary of Thoughts on Web Metrics from Chicago at AAUP 2005

  • 60 percent of visitors came from a “referring” site such as Google, Yahoo
  • Hard to separate noise from certainty (so be skeptical)
  • Visitors do not usually enter through the front door (only 17% come through the home page)
  • Look every day at top 50 entry pages (most useful); understanding the links from other pages (like search and blogs) is crucial
  • Featured content draws 10 times more visitors than product pages
  • Metrics to look at include: how many visitors, who visitors are, where they came from • tools, forms, expert advice • pathways—where they entered and exited from
  • Are hits correlated to sales? No one knows because no metrics have been tracked.
