Panelists: Eileen Quam, Freelance Indexer; Mel Gray, Professor, Opus College of Business, University of St. Thomas

Description: Technological advances in production and innovative book features (such as “Search inside the Book”), as well as tighter schedules with no room for delays late in the game, inspire us to rethink the best practices of indexing. What are the merits of “preindexing” techniques? What is the key advice to give authors (or their graduate students) when they are preparing an index for the first time? Should they be encouraged to use PDFs, or dissuaded from doing so? This session provided an opportunity for those who work with indexes to discuss the best methods of doing so in today’s publishing climate.
