2011 Design Managers and Production Managers Meeting

It has been nearly three years since our last design and production gathering, and much has changed since 2008. Budget cuts and lean times have kept us apart during a time when we've most needed to collaborate and share information. The Production and Design Managers meeting this year is, by popular demand, simpler in format with ample opportunity to discuss current issues in design and production with your peers. Our agenda includes two formal sessions, with the rest of the time reserved for moderated discussion in a friendly, roundtable-like setting. Come prepared to talk and to share.

Organizers: Jill Shimabukuro, University of Chicago Press; Maya Rhodes, Wayne State University Press; Tim Jones, Harvard University Press; Marianne Jankowski, Northwestern University Press; Martha Sewall, Johns Hopkins University Press

Agenda

We (Still) Make Books: E-Book Strategies for Design & Production Departments

University presses are facing great change in the way we do business: to the point where, at times, it feels like the delivery of scholarship and content has become as important as the content itself. This change has had a significant impact on design & production processes, as our expertise becomes a fundamental part of the e-book revolution. This session will give a basic overview of the different types of e-formats (such as DRM-PDF, EPUB, PRC) that we must know about to accommodate the demands of our publishing programs. We'll share in-depth workflow examples, including a discussion of file version control, and will offer suggestions on how to manage this additional work, especially when resources are limited.

What Inspires You?

Several designers share their secrets to staying inspired. In the spirit of current social media practices, presentations will be short, sweet, and focused. Designers have a luxurious 5 minutes to show and tell us what inspires them.
